Production Notes

Director's Notes

You Can't Take It With You first premiered in December of 1936 near the end of the Great Depression. One of Hart and Kaufman's greatest successes, the comedy won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and has become a perennial American theater favorite. The Frank Capra film version won several Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1938, and the play has entertained generations of audiences for the past 70 years.

TONY: "Darling, you mustn't mind this."

Grimes as Tony in ReAct's

Although much has changed since the 1930’s, surprisingly many of the problems the world faced are still with us today...unemployment, economic uncertainty, unstable foreign governments, racism, threats to "homeland security"...But ultimately it's the show's universal themes of family, love, and living life to the fullest which still continues to resonate the most.

This classic has always been a personal favorite, and it's been an exciting challenge bringing it to our mainstage on a shoestring budget with a multi-cultural cast, and more racially sensitive treatment. We hope those of you who saw it enjoyed the show, and that you take time out to follow your heart once in awhile, help others less fortunate and create lifelong memories with the ones that you love...because truly,...you can't take it with you.
