Production Notes

Director's Notes

"Another Gay Play." My first exposure to The Last Sunday in June was a glowing review of the original production that I came across in the New York Timesin 2003. Our company was looking for new plays to present in our annual stage play reading serties the following year and it seemed like a good choice. Although ReAct has certainly presented our share of productions featuring gay themes and characters, this was to be our first truly "gay play."

JAMES: "I'm giving up."

Our inital staged reading of the piece in 2004 was unfortunately postponed fue to a sewer flood at our venue, but went off without a hitch a month later. Originally titled Another Gay Play in an earlier draft, The Last Sunday in June is Jonathan Tolins' amusing homage to the many gay plays that have come before...works such as Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Boys in the Band, Torch Song Trilogy, etc...just to name a prominent few. The show has been described as controversial, and we've found that audience members (and critics of other productions in other cities) either really like it, or become troubled by some of the issues the characters in the play present. Tolins, one of the original producers of the American version of Queer as Folk, doesn't gve us any answers...nor does he opt for the traditional formulaic Hollywood ending. WHat he does present is a slice of gay life comedy/drama featuring a diverse group of characters (which we have diversified even more in our production) struggling to find what they want and need.

It has been a pleasure to bring this show to Seattle on our mainstage and we hope that you enjoy the performance. Like Scott's message in the final scene, no one knows how to behave anymore, but the important thing to communicate, be respectful, and tell one another the truth. "HAPPY PRIDE!"

--David Hsieh, Director of The Last Sunday in June
