Artist's Bio
Anastasia was born and grew up in Saratov, a large but very provincial city on the
Volga in the heart of the European Russia. Her mother worked (and still does) at
the Theatre Department of the Saratov Conservatory, so she can say that she was
exposed to theatre very early. She often went to the opera, and she probably saw many
more plays by the age of 10 than most of her peers. Unfortunately, after the
Soviet Union collapsed the economy went with it, so all throughout the 90's
theatres (and theatre departments) were in a state of crisis. Anastasia didn't watch
many plays anymore, and she did not know if she would even end up in this field at
all, if it wasn't for the amazing opportunity that she got in her junior year of
high school. She spent that year as an exchange student in Lamarque, Texas, where
she decided to "do drama" as her extracurricular activity. By the end of the year
she knew that she wanted to study theatre in college, and eventually to become a
professional theatre artist. Anastasia had a very vague idea what exactly it was that she
wanted to do, until she took an introductory course in costuming at her college,
Central Missouri State University. She finds being a costume designer is such a thrill,
because it allows her to explore the characters to the very depths of their
souls, and it is very exciting to be the one that gets to translate the writer's
intentions into visible, tangible objects. The audience judges characters based
on their appearance, and that is why she feels that the job of the costume designer
is extremely important. As actors play their parts, so does the costume designerand what can be a more exciting part than that of Richard III's personal
stylist!
